Two Arrested For Threatening Karnataka High Court Judges Over Hijab Verdict

Bangaluru: The Tamil Nadu Police on Saturday arrested two people for allegedly threatening to kill the judges of the Karnataka High Court for pronouncing the verdict on Hijab which upheld a ban on students wearing hijab in class.

According to reports, a threatening video had surfaced on social media, after which the police took this action.

The arrested individuals have been identified as Kovai Rahmathullah and S Jamal Mohammed Usmani.

Notably, on March 15, the High Court had upheld the state government's order regarding uniforms in educational institutions. At present, the petitioners in the case have moved to the Supreme Court.

Reportedly, advocate Umapati S has lodged a complaint with the Registrar General of Karnataka High Court on Saturday in this matter, wherein, he alleged that he found a video on WhatsApp, where a man is threatening to kill Chief Justice Rituraj Awasthi.

'In the video, the man gave similar threats to the Chief Justice of Karnataka and said that people know, where he (Judge) goes for a walk, ''Umapati said in his complaint.

According to the complainant, the video may have been shot in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, following the threats, three Karnataka high court judges will get Y-category security cover, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said on Sunday.

"We've decided to give 'Y' category security to all three judges who gave the Hijab verdict. I have instructed the officials to probe the complaint thoroughly in which some people gave life threats to them," he was quoted as saying by ANI.
